The illustrations on our site are sections taken from paintings created by Walter Leistikow. Originally from Bromberg, the artist Walter Leistikow (1865 - 1908) specialised in painting subjective moody landscapes, which took Berlin, Brandenburg and the Scandinavian countries as their settings. He belonged to the artistic-literary avant-garde of the capital of the German empire, which stood in opposition to the official Wilhelminian view of art. In 1892, when a Munch exhibition caused a major row and had to be closed, Leistikow and Max Liebermann became the founders and the driving force behind an association of artists called „The XI“. In 1898, he founded the most importantassociation of classic modern artists, the „Berlin Secession“.
